Padraig has been the Chief Executive of Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) since its establishment in 2012. Prior to that, he was simultaneously Chief Executive of the four agencies responsible for qualifications and quality assurance of further and higher education in Ireland that were amalgamated to form QQI in 2012. Having studied Chemical Engineering at University College Dublin and the University of Missouri (USA), he worked as a lecturer in Bioprocess Engineering in Dublin City University (DCU) from 1984 to 2001. He was appointed as the first DCU Director of Quality in 2001 and left DCU in 2005 to become Chief Executive of the Irish Universities Quality Board. He was appointed Chief Executive designate of QQI in 2010. He has served on the Board of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) since 2011 and was elected President of the association in 2013. He has served on governance boards of quality assurance agencies in Scotland, Switzerland and Portugal.
